Field Observation
Reflection Before my Research
In all honesty I'm not the biggest fan of the Steller's Jay. I hold some grudges against this particular bird for completely ruining some very promising camping trips, hikes and picnics by taking my sandwich. Though the stealing is really the only experience that I have of the Steller's Jay, for this project I've tried to withhold that judgement about the Steller's Jay and it's widely known and very adept ability to steal, but now I will no longer. As many of you probably know(from personal experience) the Steller's Jay tends to steal food which is why they were (not so affectionately) coined by my father "camp robbers".
Reflection After my Reasarch
After some Observing theses birds I realized that these birds are pretty intelligent. For example when Steller's Jays steal food from you
My Observation of the Steller's Jay
Finding videos to observe the Steller's Jay in was a challenge because most of them are 30 seconds to only two minutes long. I was able to find a very cool video about a Steller's Jay ability to copy the sounds of other birds. In this video the Steller's Jay wanted to get to a bird feeder, but it was swarming with other birds. The Steller's Jay made the call of the Red Shouldered Hawk and the other birds fled. The sly Steller's Jay got to gorge them self on the seeds form the bird feeder.
